The modern coaching stack:
what happens between the sessions

GET IN TOUCH

We’ve always believed that coaching isn’t just about the hour you spend in the room.

That’s where ideas begin to take shape, where assumptions can be gently explored and new perspectives start to emerge. But the changes often unfolds afterwards, as those insights are carried into day-to-day work and gradually influence how someone leads, communicates and makes decisions.

And yet, that ‘in-between’ space is often the least supported part of a coaching programme, leaving a whole lot of potential on the table.

At Thrive Partners, we’ve always believed that coaching is an ongoing process, made up of a number of touchpoints. Whether it’s our leadership and management programmes or our life transition cohorts,or the follow up conversations you have with your manager, or the project you participate in or lead to test your new found thinking and beliefs.  Our goal has never been to deliver one great session. Instead, we committed to creating sustained, meaningful change over time, which goes far beyond the coaching sessions themselves.

The question we’ve been focused on is ‘how do we better support that change in the moments that matter most?’. That’s where ROI is really built, and that’s where we’re focusing our attention next.

The gap between insight and action

Most coaching programmes follow a familiar and well-established rhythm. A participant attends a session, leaves with a set of reflections or actions and then returns to their role. In many cases, they begin to apply what they’ve explored with their coach.

But day-to-day work has a way of taking over. Priorities shift, inboxes fill up and even the most meaningful insights can gradually fade into the background. With a little more support in those in-between moments, that initial energy from coaching has a much better chance of sticking and turning into lasting change.

Good intentions get crowded out by deadlines. Without reinforcement, even the most powerful insights can fade surprisingly quickly.

This isn’t a failure of coaching – it’s a natural and very common structural gap.

The truth is, real behaviour change requires repetition, context and feedback. It needs to show up in real moments: a difficult conversation with a team member, a decision under pressure, a chance to delegate differently. And those moments don’t happen in the coaching session. They happen on a Tuesday afternoon, in the middle of everything else, when a

stressed employee comes to a new manager with a difficult question, looking for answers, reassurance and direction.

So if we want coaching to stick, we need to think beyond the session itself.

A more complete coaching experience

This is where the idea of a ‘modern coaching stack’ comes in.

Rather than seeing coaching as a standalone intervention, we can start to think about it as part of a wider ecosystem – one that supports people before, during, and crucially, between sessions.

In Thrive’s programmes, that means combining expert coaching with practical tools that help participants translate insight into action.

That’s why we’ve partnered with Helix, 5app’s AI skills intelligence platform, to further extend the impact of your coaching into everyday work.

So, what actually happens between sessions?

Let’s take a simple example.

Someone in our leadership and management programme has just had a session focused on giving more effective feedback. They’ve explored their own hesitations, reflected on their relationship with their team member, built an approach for the conversation and committed to delivering their next 1:1 differently.

The session ends. They go back to work. This is the critical moment.

With Helix in place, that individual isn’t left to rely on memory or motivation alone. It provides between-session scaffolding, giving your coachees ongoing, tailored support that connects directly to what they’re trying to do.

It does this by quietly joining real calls, whether that’s on Google Meet, Microsoft Teams or Zoom, and listening out for key skills and behaviours. After the meeting, it analyses the transcript and provides personalised feedback to coachees within minutes, including their strengths, growth opportunities and tailored recommendations for what to do next. This data is also available on personal dashboards to track skills development progress over time.

In practical terms, that looks like:

  • Personalised skill development: Helix identifies the specific skills they’re working on – in this case, giving feedback and communication – and provides tailored feedback and scores.
  • Highly relevant content recommendations: Based on its analysis of the coachee’s skills, Helix will recommend highly relevant content to further develop key skills.
  • Reflection and reinforcement: After the interaction, they can capture what happened, reflect on what worked and build self-awareness over time.

None of this replaces the depth of a coaching session. But it does something equally important: it keeps the work alive.

Making behaviour change visible

One of the biggest challenges with coaching has always been measurement.

We know it works. We see the shifts in confidence, clarity and capability. But when it comes to demonstrating real ROI – especially at scale – it can be difficult to move beyond anecdotal evidence.

By supporting what happens between sessions, we also start to make those changes more visible – especially for soft skills, which until now have been notoriously difficult to objectively track and measure.

Helix provides a way to track skill development over time. Not in a reductive, tick-box way, but as a living picture of how someone is engaging with their growth. Are they practising new behaviours? Are they building consistency? Are certain skills improving faster than others?

For organisations investing in programmes like women in leadership or executive coaching, this matters. It allows us to connect the dots between coaching input and behavioural output. It enables us to show not just that people enjoyed the programme, but that they’re actually leading and behaving differently as a result. And the feedback can then feed into the next coaching conversation to deeper explore triggers and blockers to performance and productivity.

The result: coaching that compounds

When you support what happens between sessions, we start to see something interesting.

Coaching stops being a series of isolated conversations and starts to feel like a continuous experience. Each session builds on real-world application, each application is reinforced and refined and progress becomes cumulative.

And it is vastly different from an AI coach bot that needs you to know what you need to rehearse or change and prompt the bot with a question or observation. It gives you that fine detail that allows you to really see the moment you could have gone another way, pinning it down so it is directly observable and therefore meaningful. And in this way you can reflect, accept,  learn, grow and integrate at speed.

That’s where ROI truly comes from. Not from a single breakthrough moment, but from the steady accumulation of small, meaningful changes over time. At Thrive, we’re already delivering up to 300% ROI for our customers, and with Helix, we’re aiming higher.

For businesses like yours, that means more confident leaders, stronger teams and even clearer evidence of impact. For individuals, it means development that actually sticks – not just for the duration of a programme, but well beyond it.

Coaching will always start with a conversation, and that’s where so much of its value is created. What follows is where those insights begin to take root and grow. By paying attention to what happens between sessions, there’s an opportunity to help that value carry further, so the impact of coaching can deepen and last well beyond the conversation itself.
